Learn all about locks and how to pick them!
TOOOL (The Open Organisation of Lockpickers) is having a lockpicking workshop at MakeIt Labs.
This event is free to attend, but due to limited space, a ticket is required. Donations are accepted and will go to MakeIt Labs to help us continue to host events such as this one. Please select either the "Free Admission" ticket or "Donation Admission" ticket.
There will be roughly one hour of instruction followed by plenty of time for you to gain hands on experience.
Objectives and Mission:
To give a basic working knowledge of how locks work and what makes locks vulnerable to picking. We will briefly touch on more advanced topics (i.e. bumping, impressioning), but those concepts would be greek to someone if you didn't understand basics. You will also understand what makes locks more secure, to better allow you to protect your valuables. And most importantly, you'll learn the fun of sportpicking (picking locks as a hobby as well as for competition).
The mission of the Open Organisation Of Lockpickers is to advance the general public knowledge about locks and lockpicking. By examining locks, safes, and other such hardware and by publicly discussing our findings we hope to strip away the mystery with which so many of these products are imbued.
The more that people know about lock technology, the better they are capable of understanding how and where certain weaknesses are present. This makes them well-equipped to participate in sportpicking endeavors and also helps them simply be better consumers in the marketplace, making decisions based on sound fact and research.
About the Instructors:
The instructors will be Tom Williams, Casey Dunham and Brian Mitchell.
Tom WIlliams is a former United States Marine who is currently working in Information Security and technical support in Portsmouth, NH. He has been picking locks for approximately one year. He picks locks because of the great feeling of opening the puzzle that we see every day and no one understands.
Brian got started in security about two years ago, beginning with network security and eventually discovering physical bypass and lock picking. His lock picking really picked up after the formation of the TOOOL's PWM chapter almost a year ago. Since then he's enjoyed teaching the many people who've TOOOL PWM's monthly meetings and really enjoys the challenge of being introduced to a new lock.
